HISTORICAL SUMMARY
In the same way that many dogs in the Terrier group were not really appreciated by sporty gentlemen before the mid-19th century, the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier is an ancient breed that was simply ignored for a long time, despite the later results of the experiments of the Imaal. breed. He is very much a local race, confined to the arid region of the Glen of Imaal. The farmers of this region, who are descended from soldiers whose land was received as payment for services rendered to the British Crown in the 16th and 17th centuries and who had to use their natural cunning and dexterity to survive in these arid terrains. A dog that could not impose itself in the day-to-day struggle for subsistence would not be tolerated. So he had to spend long hours pulling dog carts and was often taken to fighting other dogs in the dubious sport of dog fighting, now extinct. Before the Glen of Imaal Irish Terrier became known at dog shows, he developed through generations of hard work the strong, stocky dog we know today. The Irish Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1934 and a club to look after its interests was soon founded.

BEHAVIOR AND TEMPERAMENT: Active, agile and silent when working. Huntsman and smart, with great courage when required, however, sweet and docile that exudes personality; his loyal and affectionate nature makes him a very acceptable home and companion dog. The Imaal Glen Irish Terrier is said to be the least excitable of the terriers, although it is always ready to hunt when called upon.
