Rat killing reached its peak in the mid 1800's and what dog shows were held in public spaces. In Manchester especially, these became weekly and soon this terrier had classes of his own, eventually taking the name Manchester Terrier.

Small brown dot on each cheek and above each eye; below the jaw and throat brown, clearly forming a “V”. The forelimbs, from the carpus downwards, are brown, with the exception of the digits, which should be brushed with black; a very distinct black mark (thumb mark) immediately above the paw. The inner surface of the hind limbs is brown, but the knee joint is divided into black and brown. Brown under the tail and around the anus, the spot being as narrow as possible so that it is covered by the tail. A small brown mark on each side of the chest. Brown on the outside of the hind limbs, commonly called “breeches”, is undesirable. In any case, the black and brown markings must not mix, but the boundary between them must be clearly defined.
