GENERAL APPEARANCE : A small, active and graceful dog; medium to fine boned; uniformly hairless body, with hair only on the head, feet and tail; or covered by a veil of soft fur. There are two distinct types of this breed: the “Deer Type”, lively and fine-boned, and the “Cobby Type”, with a heavier build and bone.

Personality: Elegant, active and happy.

HISTORICAL SUMMARY

The Chinese crested dog comes in two varieties – the Pelado and the “Powder Puff”. The Pelado has a crest of fur on its head that extends to the underside of its neck, "socks" covering its toes, and a plume on its tail. The rest of its body is, as its name implies, hairless. The “Powder Puff” variety is entirely covered in a veil of long, soft fur. Although it is difficult to identify their origin, it is said that they were owned by families from the Han dynasty of China. Chinese Crested Dogs were developed at this time as guardians of treasure houses and with a larger, heavier, hunting dogs. They were seen at exhibitions in America between 1885 and 1926, but then rarely seen for about fifty years.

BEHAVIOR AND TEMPERAMENT: Happy and never aggressive.

HEAD: Smooth, without excess wrinkles. The distance from the base of the skull to the stop is equal to the distance from the stop to the tip of the nose. The head has a graceful appearance with an alert expression.

CRANIAL REGION

Skull: Slightly rounded and elongated.

Stop: Slightly pronounced, but not excessive.

FACIAL REGION

Nose: An important characteristic narrow in relation to the muzzle; any color for the truffle is acceptable.

Muzzle: Slightly narrowed, without being pointed, dry and without hanging lips.

Lips: Tight and thin.

Jaws and Teeth: Jaws strong, with a perfect and regular scissor bite, ie the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth and are set squarely to the jaws.

Cheeks: Well sculpted, thin and flat, tapering to the muzzle.

Eyes: So dark as to appear black. A little or no white from the conjunctiva should appear. Medium in size, almond shaped. Inserted well apart.

Ears: Set low: the highest point at the base of the ear is level with the outside of the eye. Large and upright, with or without fringes, except in the “Powder Puffs” variety, where floppy ears are permitted.

NECK: Slim, without throatiness, long and sloping gracefully into strong shoulders. When in motion, it is carried high and slightly arched.

BODY: Medium to long, flexible.

Back: Flat.

Loin: Firm.

Croup: Well rounded and muscular.

Chest: Broad and deep, without barrel ribs. The sternum is not prominent. The rib cage extends to the elbows.

Bottom line: Slightly tucked up.

TAIL : Set on high, carried up or out when moving. Long and tapering, reasonably straight, neither curled nor bent to either side, falling naturally when at rest. Long, flowing fringes, limited to the last two-thirds (2/3) of the tail. Slight fringes are acceptable.

MEMBERS

General Appearance: Legs long and slender, well set under the torso.

Shoulders: Clean, narrow and well laid back.

Elbows: Well fitted to the body.

Pastern: Thin, strong, almost vertical.

Feet: Extended, narrow and long hare feet. Nails of any color, moderately long. “Socks” preferably limited to the fingers, reaching the maximum to the top of the metacarpal. The paws must turn neither in nor out.

HINDQUARTERS

General Appearance: Legs well apart. The angulations must be sufficient so that the back is level.

Knees: Firm and long, passing smoothly over the hocks.

Metatarsals: Hocks well let down.

GAIT/MOVEMENT: Long, flowing and elegant, with good reach and plenty of drive.

SKIN: Of fine thickness, smooth, warm to the touch.

COAT

Hair: Nowhere on the body should there be large areas of hair. A long, flowing crest is preferable, but a sparse crest is acceptable; preferably starting from the “stop” and decreasing to the lower part of the neck. In the “Powder Puff” the cover coat consists of an undercoat with a soft veil of long hairs, the veil-shaped coat being characteristic.

COLOR: Any color or color combination.

SIZE: Ideal at the withers: Males: 28 to 33 cm Females: 23 to 30 cm

FAULTS

Any deviation from this standard should be considered a fault and penalized in exact proportion to its severity and its effects on the health and well being of the dog.

DISQUALIFYING FAULTS

• Aggressiveness or excessive shyness.

• Any dog that shows any sign of physical or behavioral anomaly must be disqualified.

• Atypical dogs.
